Skilling Up for the Future: LILAMA 2’s Open Day for the Industry and TVET stakeholders

On June 20, 2024, LILAMA 2 International Technology College (LILAMA 2) hosted an Open Day for the industry promoting an inclusive skills development for Viet Nam’s green and digital transition. The event brought together over 150 stakeholders from technical and vocational education and training (TVET) and the digital manufacturing industry, highlighting LILAMA 2’s commitment to addressing the skills gap in Vietnam’s manufacturing sector.

The event served as a platform for national and international chambers, sector associations and companies connecting with TVET authorities, institutes and students for a joint implementation of cooperative training and opportunities of future-proof career paths in Viet Nam’s digital industry. As the country embarks on a digital and green transformation, technological changes and shortages of highly skilled technicians and engineers remain major concerns.

Rector Nguyen Khanh Cuong emphasised the positive changes in LILAMA 2’s training capacity, citing close collaboration between the college and manufacturing enterprises. To facilitate this collaboration, the event featured an exclusive exhibition where companies showcased their operations and worked with LILAMA 2 to develop and implement training programmes that meet industry needs.

The event also marked the final step of the development partnership (DPP) “Vocational Training for Smart Manufacturing in Machine Tools”, implemented by Siemens Viet Nam and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH.  DPPs are supported by the develoPPP programme of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and promotes private-sector activities where entrepreneurial opportunities and development policy potential meet. The project supported LILAMA 2 on its way to become a centre of excellence for smart manufacturing and the first authorised Siemens training center for digital technology and education in Viet Nam.

Within the project time, two elective industry applied training modules and 27 short-term training programmes on smart manufacturing were developed and knowledge and skills multiplied to more than 600 TVET teachers, trainees, in-company trainers and technicians of which 100 were women and 101 were below 25 years old, and 94% of the surveyed training participants confirmed an improved employability or higher career chances.

As a result of the sucessfull and sustainable implementation of the DPP “Vocational Training for Smart Manufacturing in Machine Tools”, LILAMA 2 also signed memoranda of understanding with the Ho Chi Minh City’s Association of Mechanical – Electrical Enterprises and the Ho Chi Minh University of Technology and Education to collaborate in workforce training and research in mechanical and electrical engineering.
