Follow-up activities to improve digital competency for staff and teachers at Ninh Thuan Vocational College (NTVC)

Recently, activities aimed at enhancing digital capacity among the staff and teachers of Ninh Thuan Vocational College (NTVC) have been frequently implemented. The initiative began with the Design Thinking Workshop on the Moodle application in March 2023, facilitated by Digital Ambassadors and core teachers from GIZ’s partner colleges. The Programme “Reform of TVET in Viet Nam” (TVET Programme) continued to support NTVC by organising a 1.5-day training course on 30th – 31st August 2023. The primary objective of this course was to equip participants with both basic and advanced skills in creating digital lectures using the Moodle application. This training was conducted by three core teachers from NTVC, aiming to boost motivation for utilising digital tools and platforms in the college’s teaching and learning processes.

A select group of 30 NTVC teachers were chosen to participate in a “Training of Trainers” (ToT) model, with the goal of enhancing the teachers’ capabilities. These trained teachers would then be able to further educate their colleagues from various faculties/departments who may not have not had the opportunity to attend on-site training courses. The training course was delivered and guided directly on the Moodle Learning Management System (LMS) platform of the college. Course content was carefully selected to align with the current needs and knowledge levels of the teachers. Key Moodle features that received focused attention included: course creation and formatting, designing course structures and content to enhance participant interaction, developing test content in various formats (e.g., multiple choice, drag and drop, fill in the blank, true or false), utilizing H5P features, and creating video lectures based on existing PowerPoint materials.

The course incorporated both theoretical and practical components. After each training segment, teachers engaged in practical assignments, which they submitted directly to the system for review and feedback. This approach facilitated the sharing of questions, challenges, and experiences related to the lecture development process among the teachers, enhancing the course’s overall effectiveness. Additionally, video-based training materials with detailed guidance were provided, allowing teachers to easily reference the content after the course if they desired further review.

Addressing the participants at the training course, Mr. Nguyen Phan Anh Quoc, the Principal of NTVC, expressed his appreciation for GIZ’s efforts in enhancing digital competencies among NTVC’s teachers. He acknowledged that while there is still room for improvement in terms of awareness and motivation among teachers to integrate digital tools into their teaching practices, the support from GIZ has played a crucial role in raising awareness and motivating teachers to enhance their teaching methods and adhere to regulations when preparing digital platform-based lectures.

Although the training course was brief, it provided teachers with valuable opportunities to learn, exchange ideas, and share their experiences in applying digital skills in their teaching. This contribution has been instrumental in the success of NTVC’s digital transformation journey. NTVC’s leaders and teachers have expressed their high regard for these activities and have suggested maintaining similar initiatives in the future.
